TRAVEL

All delegates are encouraged to book travel to Cairns as soon as possible. First Nations Media has arranged coordinated return flights and ferry transfer from Cairns to Thursday Island via Horn Island. Please read flight time and dates carefully and ensure that you will be in Cairns before midday on Sunday 22nd September 2019. There's an early flight to Horn Island in the morning for people stopping overnight in Cairns on Saturday 21st, or a lunchtime flight for those arriving in Cairns on the Sunday morning.

FERRY

(note that bus transfers from airport to wharf will be included in the ferry ticket return)

Horn Island - Thursday Island
The 10:00AM Qantas arrival flights will need to catch the 10:30AM ferry to TI (21 Sept)
The 10:00AM Qantas arrival flights will need to catch the 10:30AM ferry to TI (22 Sept)
The 2:30PM Qantas arrival flights will need to catch the 3:00PM ferry to TI (22 Sept)

Thursday Island - Horn Island
Will need to catch the 9:00AM ferry from TI to connect with 10:30AM Qantas flight (28 Sept)
Will need to catch 1:30PM ferry from TI to connect with 3:00PM Qantas flight (28 Sept)
Will need to catch the 9:00AM ferry from TI to connect with 10:30AM Qantas flight (29 Sept)

CATERING

Meals will be provided at the festival site from lunchtime on Sunday 22nd September to breakfast on Sunday 29th September. 

 

ACCOMMODATION

ACCOMMODATION - CAIRNS
Delegates who are required to stay a night in Cairns will need to arrange their own accommodation. Coordinated transfers to the airport on the 22nd September 2019 will be available at the following accommodation: 

Acacia Court Hotel 
Delegates will need to call accomodation and quote “First Nations Media”
$115 standard room 

Comfort Inn Cairns City 
Delegates will need to call accomodation and quote “First Nations Media”
$118 standard room 
$128 ocean view room 
$12.50 for breakfast 
 
ACCOMMODATION - THURSDAY ISLAND 
The Festival campsite will be located at Tagai State College, located on the northern side of Thursday Island. Delegates will be allocated the location of their tent which, will include a mattress and bedding. 

The campsite is the preferred accommodation for the festival as it is located right beside the main conference venue and all meals will be served there. 

Limited hotel accommodation is available on the southern side of the island. Please advise Jacinta Barbour if you intend to book alternate accommodation so that transport can be arranged.

SKILLS WORKSHOPS

There are up to 6 skills workshops to choose from available for Indigenous Media Workers to attend. 

Please select 3 options of different skills workshop by preference. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences. 

 

WEATHER

The climate in the Torres Strait is tropical, humid and can also get windy in September.  Please take precautions to make sure you are hydrated and protected from the sun throughout the day by packing a hat, sunscreen, cool clothing. It is also recommended to take insect repellent. A water bottle will be included in the delegate pack.
