First Nations Media Landscape

The First Nations media landscape is quite extensive across Australia.

There are 29 community-managed media organisations. There are three television stations (ICTV, CAAMA and Ngaarda) and a radio news network (NIRS).

Eight media organisations operate as RIMOs - Remote Indigenous Media Organisations. These are connected to a vast network of small community stations operating in remote areas, particularly in WA, NT, Queensland and SA.

There are another 20 commercial media organisations in NSW, WA and QLD.

You can download the profiles of the community - managed media organisations for each State and Territory below. These are members of FNMA.

Why form partnerships with First Nations media organisations

Here are five compelling reasons why businesses should form partnerships with First Nations media organisations:

Authentic Engagement with First Nations Communities

Partnering with First Nations media enables businesses to connect with Indigenous audiences in a culturally appropriate and respectful way. These media organisations have trusted relationships and deep local knowledge, making them ideal channels for meaningful engagement.

Enhancing Cultural Competency and Social Responsibility

Such partnerships demonstrate a commitment to reconciliation and inclusion, helping businesses fulfil Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) goals. It also fosters greater awareness and understanding of First Nations cultures among staff and stakeholders.

Amplifying Indigenous Voices and Perspectives

Supporting First Nations media helps elevate Indigenous stories, languages, and perspectives, contributing to a more diverse and representative media landscape. Businesses play a role in countering historical marginalisation and promoting media equity.

Reaching Underserved Audiences

Many First Nations media outlets serve remote and regional communities that mainstream media often overlooks. Partnering with them can extend a business’s reach into new markets and deepen brand loyalty within these communities.

Supporting Sustainable Indigenous Enterprises

First Nations media organisations are often community-owned and not-for-profit. Collaborating with them supports Indigenous economic development and job creation in media, journalism, and the creative industries.
