The ABC have launched a news service in two Indigenous languages: Warlpiri and Yolngu Matha.
IRCA welcomes the service, which is available for RIBS and Indigenous Radio Services to re-broadcast, such as PAW Radio (broadcasting in Warlpiri) and Yolngu Radio(broadcasting in Yolngu Matha).
IRCA notes that this service does not replace the need for news services that are produced and distributed by Indigenous media organisations. Remote media organisations have developed over 30 years on a vision of self-representation and sustaining language and culture. They support local broadcasting and coordinate regional radio networks with radio programming and news services that represent the views, perspectives and interests of their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community audiences. The ABC trial of mainstream news translated into two Aboriginal languages is a welcome supplementary service. IRCA also invites ABC to work in partnership with the remote media sector to collect stories by remote media organisations and community correspondents to distribute to national audiences.
