Farewell to Indigenous broadcaster and land rights leader Tiga Bayles

The Board, staff and membership of Indigenous Remote Communications Association send their sympathy to the family and friends of long-time broadcaster, activist and land rights leader Tiga Bayles.

Tiga played an active role over four decades in the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media in Australia.  He helped set up Radio Redfern in Sydney in the early 1980s.  He moved to Brisbane to set up the Brisbane Indigenous Media Association (BIMA) and the National Indigenous Radio Service. In recent years, he served as Chairperson and Vice Chair of Australian Indigenous Communications Association.

As well as his contribution to broadcasting, Tiga was a powerful advocate and leader in land rights, health, justice and education. He will be greatly missed
