Remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio is the go-to radio service for government information and news in very remote communities. With a high weekly listenership of 80% of very remote peoples, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio is the preferred channel for factual content, rating above television and the Internet.
One aspect of its high listener rates is the connection people feel to their local radio and the high value they place on it. Reasons for listening range from the positive focus of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio on news and stories, through to its role in supporting local employment.
The results of the 2016 Remote Indigenous Communications and Media Survey are continuing to yield valuable data showing the importance of remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio.
